When my son was two years old, his father started singing Summertime ("Summertime, and the livin' is easy/fish are jumping/the cotton is high/your daddy's rich/your mama's good lookin'/so hush little baby/don't you cry"). My son started crying, and I said to him, "Baby, what's wrong?" He replied, "That song is just too beautiful." To me, that just about sums up the mystery and the power of music. Music is not a spectator sport, like television. Sure, you can zone out to it, but even that is active listening. People are involved in music, even if they aren't musicians. We work out to it, we dance and celebrate with it, we make love to it, we eat dinner while it plays softly in the background. It reminds us of people and events in our lives, brings out deeply buried emotions, and catalyzes thoughts to action. At least it does for me, and for most people I know. Who doesn't love music? Given the way I feel, it's seems natural that I would leave a career in journalism to promote music and community events. I'll be honest: I am new to music promotion, but I've been able to do a great job thus far, thanks to my background in journalism. I know what it's like to be an editor and reporter, and I know how to pitch a story. I am building my media connections on a daily basis. I've gotten myself published in national publications and feel I can do the same for the musicians I work with. I've also simplified my work and home environment so that I have a low overhead and can charge very reasonable rates while providing a great service. In addition to promoting music, I help plan and promote events. Quirky personal fact: most people call me Liz, but I can't help but write my full name out. Other personal stuff: I'm 37 and raising three kids, ages 16, 9, and 6; I'm trying my best to stay on top of politics; I read a lot of books and magazines; and I like to be involved in various forms of community organizing. The revolution won't happen if you don't show up. And yes, I do find time to eat and sleep--a little bit each day! If ya really wanna know anything else, check me out on myspace.
